<br />There was a boy who kept failing in primary 
<br />school, from P1 to P6, and his PSLE was nearing. 
<br />One day, his father said to him, "Son, if you do 
<br />well in your PSLE, I'll buy you a new console 
<br />game." Feeling excited about gaining his reward, 
<br />he worked really hard for his PSLE and scored 
<br />261. His father was so proud of him and 
<br />said, "Son, you have done well. I'll buy you a 
<br />new console game." However, this boy said "No, 
<br />Dad, I don't want a console game, I just want a 
<br />green ball."
<br />
<br />So his father got him a green ball. This boy 
<br />went to RI and he started failing again until 
<br />Sec 4 where his O Levels were nearing. So his 
<br />father said to him again, "Son, if you do well 
<br />in your Os, I'll buy you a laptop." On hearing 
<br />that, the boy was overjoyed and so he worked 
<br />real hard for his Os. He came back with 4 
<br />points. His father was so happy and said, "Son, 
<br />congratulations! You earned a laptop!" But the 
<br />boy shook his head and said "Aah Dad, it's okay, 
<br />just get me a green ball."
<br />
<br />Although confused, his father got him a green 
<br />ball as he wished. So the boy entered Hwa Zhong 
<br />JC and yet again, he started failing and failing 
<br />until his second year when his A Levels were 
<br />around the corner. His father then said to his 
<br />son, "Please do well in you A Levels. I'll get 
<br />you a motorcycle." And the boy did, scoring 
<br />staright As and topped the whole of 
<br />Singapore. "Great, son!" The father said, "I'll 
<br />buy you a motorcycle." Again, the boy smiled and 
<br />patted his father's shoulder and said, "Dad, 
<br />don't waste your money on a two wheeled junk. 
<br />Just get me a green ball."
<br />
<br />His father was shocked, but he had no choice but 
<br />to give his son what he wanted. This boy then 
<br />entered NUS after his National Service. This 
<br />time, his father didn't want him to keep failing 
<br />again, so he told his son, "Do well in the U, 
<br />get your degree, I'll give you anything you 
<br />want." So the boy did, not only earning a degree 
<br />but a doctorate (do you think you can even get 
<br />that in the U!?). The father was overjoyed and 
<br />said, "Well done my beloved son! Come, name what 
<br />you want, I'll get it for you." The boy's reply, 
<br />again, was "green ball, Dad."
<br />
<br />Scratching his head, he wondered why his boy 
<br />wanted nothing but green balls, but still he got 
<br />another one for him. One day, the President of 
<br />Singapore had a coma. According to observations 
<br />the president is not going to be able to make 
<br />it. So the father told his boy, who was already 
<br />a doctor, saying, "if you can save our 
<br />president, all my money, all my property, 
<br />everything that belongs to me is yours." So the 
<br />boy was determined to save the President and 
<br />miraculously, he was successful. The father felt 
<br />like the happiest man in the world, and he told 
<br />his son, "All of mine is yours, take it." 
<br />However, the boy answered "The Government is 
<br />rewarding us with a billion bucks, Dad, don't 
<br />waste everything on me but keep them. Just get 
<br />me a green ball."
<br />
<br />Again, his father gave him another green ball, 
<br />still curious over his son's obsessions over 
<br />green balls. One day, this boy got into a tragic 
<br />accident where he was run down by a truck. In 
<br />the hospital, the doctor's observations showed 
<br />that the boy was not going to make it and is 
<br />about to die. The father, eyes full of tears, 
<br />went to the side of his son's bed and held his 
<br />hand. "I'm sorry Dad." The boy apologised to his 
<br />father. "It's okay," said his father, "but tell 
<br />me, why do you always want me to buy green balls 
<br />for you?"
<br />
<br />"Because... Because..." Before the boy could 
<br />finish, he died.
